Life had become a challenge. My blood pressure was so high I was taking 4 different prescriptions for it; my cholesterol was so high it could not be accurately measured, and my blood sugars were averaging close to 300. My day consisted of 23 pills before breakfast, 2 more before lunch, and 6 more at dinner, plus two daily injections of insulin. My sleep apnea was so bad they tested me three different times to verify the results. My weight was 276 pounds and my primary care physician had concluded I was “Non Compliant."

But everything changed when I met Jeannie Morris and the Laparoscopic Gastric Banding team. My primary care physician had referred me to Jeannie for Diabetes management and education, and she was steadily helping me lower by blood sugars. Early one Sunday morning I watched Dr Adam Kaplan and Ms Jeannie Morris on WTAP television discuss the Laparoscopic Gastric Banding program. I called Jeannie the next day and was scheduled to attend an education seminar the next Saturday. I filled out the documents required and started the 6 months of diet education required by my insurance company. It took me 10 months to satisfy my insurance requirement which again was because of my non compliance; I quit keeping food logs, starting eating whatever I wanted and stopped coming to see Lindsay Smith the Dietician, so I had to start again. Through 10 months of visits the whole gastric banding team was great and encouraged me all the way. With the staffs guidance, hard work and patience I fulfilled the insurance requirements

It was an eye opening experience. I learned you get out of the program whatever you put into it. To date I have lost 88 pounds. My goal is to lose 20 more. My blood pressure is back under control with only half a dose of 1 pill instead of heavy doses of 4 different medications. My most recent blood sugars were 133 without any diabetic medication. My cholesterol was normal for the first time since the 1980’s. My snoring and sleep apnea is gone. I feel like my life is beginning again.

I am often asked how I did it, what is the secret to my weight loss. My answer is the always the same; even with the procedure you have to be willing to change the way you think, the way you eat, and the way you live. You have to listen to the talented group of health care providers that form the Gastric Banding team and be compliant with their directions; they really know what they are talking about. Most important, you have to have support, not only from the health care team but in your personal life. I would not have been as successful with the program without the support and encouragement of my wife. You cannot do it by yourself, it is not a "magic bullet" where if you have the surgery you will automatically become skinny - there is work and commitment involved. The results make it worthwhile. I wish I could have had this procedure years ago.
